Course Objectives

At the end of this short course the student will be able to:

  • Distinguish the characteristics of IT project work as opposed to operation or support work
  • Understand the IT project lifecycle and organisational roles within that lifecycle
  • Identify and describe IT project team roles and responsibilities throughout projects in their organisation with respect to scope, tasks, timeframes, communication, budget, risks, quality and procurement
  • Identify and describe the impact of change on scope, tasks, timeframes, budget, risks, quality and procurement.

Course Description

This course will enable IT project team members to comprehend IT project terminology, characteristics and lifecycle. They will consider and understand the wider IT Project environment in their organisation and recognise their role and responsibilities within this environment.

Course Outline

The major topics are:

  • Introduction: IT Projects, Project lifecycle, Software Lifecycle
  • Resources involved in IT Projects in their organisation – IT team members, project sponsor, business users and champions, stakeholders, third parties - their roles and responsibilities
  • Project Scope:
    • Define scope and identify where scope is set throughout the project (analysis, design, development, testing, implementation)
    • The importance of scope and documenting scope
    • Team members responsibilities with respect to setting and adhering to scope
    • When scope changes: including change requests and their impact
  • Project Schedule and Timeframes:
    • The importance of a schedule and timeframes
    • Team members responsibilities to provide input to tasks, timeframes, prioritising work load and working within tasks allocated and timeframes
  • Project Communication:
    • The importance of team communication
    • Team member responsibilities with respect to project communications
  • Project Budget and Procurement:
    • The importance of the budget and procurement
    • Team members responsibilities with respect to identifying project costs and procurement
  • Project Risks:
    • The importance of identifying risks and the risk register
    • Team member responsibilities with respect to risk identification, providing ratings, minimising, mitigating and monitoring risks
  • Project Quality
    • The importance of setting standards and monitoring quality
    • Team member responsibilities with respect to delivering quality and using standards
