Background Information
This is one of the first academic courses in the world to teach students on SQL SERVER 2008. It will provide attendees with the opportunity to take advantage of the new features provided by SQL Server 2008 so that they can design, build, query and develop enterprise SQL Server 2008 databases and servers.
This is a practical course for the ICT Industry utilizing the latest SQL Server 2008 (Katmai) developed by Microsoft. SQL Server 2008 provides much anticipated improvements to the management studio with Intellisense support, as well as new geospatial data types and a wealth of programming enhancements. The improved security is a feature of this release. This course provides attendees with the knowledge necessary to take advantage of new features provided by SQL Server 2008. It provides a comprehensive overview of technologies, security, and design best practices with particular emphasis on hands-on skills.
Who Should Attend
The target audience for this course is:
- New developers with previous programming experience in VB, C, .NET or another modern language wanting to upgrade their skills
- Intermediate programmers who will design and build Windows and Web based applications using SQL Server 2008
- Programmers who are evaluating Microsoft SQL Server 2008 tools
Course Objectives
On completion of this course, students should have the skills to:
- Decide whether to migrate to SQL Server 2008
- Develop and write code for SQL Server 2008
- Use SQL Server 2008 reporting services
- Design Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)
- Design distributed applications using the Distributed Application Designer

This course has a particular emphasisis on real world applications and skills. Topics covered include:
- SQL Server 2008 Architecture and Components
- Programming SQL Server 2008 with .NET
- Enhancements to Transact-SQL
- The XML Data Type and XQuery
- Security Improvements
- ADO.NET 2.0
- SQL Server Service Broker
- Developing client applications
- Security features
- Geospatial data
Assessment
Although there will be a number of hands-on exercises during the course, there is no formal assessment. Curently there is no certification for SQL Server 2008 however students can take official Microsoft exams 70-305, 70-306, 70-315 or 70-316 to earn credit towards a MCAD or MCSD certification.
Prerequisites
Previous programming experience in VB, C, .NET or another modern language.
Persons who do not seek certifications or a technical job post completion of the course.
All students, either technical or non-technical, can enjoy the benefits of the course.

No formal texts are required however the following might prove useful.
Microsoft SQL Server 2008: A Beginner's Guide, by Duscan Petkovic (July 2008). Introduces all the new features such as administration, development and business intelligence tools.
Laboratory Equipment
Linux or Unix lab SQL Server 2008 RC0, Visual Studio 2008
Students will have access to a fully functional version of the software, and will be provided with up-to-date versions of the hands-on-labs and other presentation materials. Students will discover and try out practical, real-world examples of SQL Server 2008 software solutions.
