Background Information

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 is a complete business intelligence (BI) platform that provides the features, tools, and functionality to build both classic and innovative kinds of analytical applications.

A key goal of the SQL Server 2008 Business Intelligence components is to support the development and use of business intelligence in enterprises of all sizes, and to all employees - not just management and analysts, but also operational and external constituents. To this end, SQL Server 2008 is complete, integrated, easy to use, publishes data as web services, delivers great performance on commodity hardware, and contains scores of new features that you can use to develop innovative analytical applications.

Who Should Attend

The target audience for this course is:

  • Developers who have completed the SQL Server 2008 for Developers.
  • New developers with previous programming experience in VB, C, .NET or another modern language wanting to upgrade their skills
  • Intermediate programmers who will design and build Windows and Web based applications using SQL Server 2008
  • Programmers who are evaluating Microsoft SQL Server 2008 tools Course Objectives

Course Objectives

On completion of this course, students should have the skills to:

  • Use the Business Intelligence Development Studio to develop BI database objects
  • Use SQL Server Management Studio to operate and maintain BI database objects
  • Use Business Intelligence Development Studio for designing and debugging BI applications
  • Understand that SQL Server 2008 provides many options to deviate from generic database design, by eliminating or virtualizing different components

Course Outline

This course has a particular emphasisis on real world applications and skills. Topics covered include:

  • SQL Server Management Studio
  • SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio
  • Other BI tools such as DTS, Analysis Services OLAP, Analysis Services Data Mining and Reporting Services
  • SQL Server 2008relational database.

Assessment

Although there will be a number of hands-on exercises during the course, there is no formal assessment. Currently there is no certification for SQL Server 2008 however students can take official Microsoft exams 70-305, 70-306, 70-315 or 70-316 to earn credit towards a MCAD or MCSD certification.

Assumed Knowledge

Previous programming experience in VB, C, .NET or another modern language.

Laboratory Equipment

Linux or Unix lab SQL Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008
Students will have access to a fully functional version of the software, and will be provided with up-to-date versions of the hands-on-labs and other presentation materials. Students will discover and try out practical, real-world examples of SQL Server 2008 software solutions.
