Background Information

The course prepares students for the Building Cisco Remote Access Networks v2.0 Exam (BCRAN 642-821) a required exam for the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) industry certification.

Industry Involvement

An agreement between the University of Technology, Sydney and CISCO Systems has been formalised for the delivery of CCNA, CCNP and Sponsored Curriculum courses. The agreement provides certification of UTS lecturers for the presentation of the Cisco authorized material used in its courses. This means that lecturers at UTS meet Cisco's standards in these areas. UTS is a regional Cisco Academy. This course is one of a set of four (4) advanced modules which aim to provide students with hands-on experience with advanced networking equipment. The CCNP curriculum trains students to install, configure and operate local and wide area networks ( LANs and WANs), and dial access services for organisations with networks from 100 to more than 500 nodes with protocols and technologies such as: TCP/IP; OSPF; EIGRP; BGP; ISDN; Frame Relay; Spanning Tree Protocol (STP); and Virtual Trunking Protocol (VTP).

Students who wish to enrol in any one of the 4 CCNP Preparation courses should have successfully completed all the CCNA courses and should be the holders of a valid CCNA Certificate. These skills can be gained by passing the CCNA Stages 1 through 4 which are also offered by this university. The CCNP Stage Two (Remote Access Protocols and Technologies) course prepares students for the CISCO Certified Network Professional certification examination Building Cisco Remote Access Networks v2.0 Exam (BCRAN 642-821). On completion of this CCNP Stage 2 course, participants may take the 642-831 exam through a registered testing site such as Prometric or Vue. Information about Cisco CCNP certification can be found here.

Who Should Attend

The target audience for this course includes:

  • Network administrators who are responsible for implementing and troubleshooting enterprise WAN backbones
  • Network technicians responsible for implementing and or troubleshooting customer remote access network implementations
  • CCNP and CCDP candidates
  • CCIE Dial ISP and routing/switching candidates

Course Objectives

On successful completion of this subject, the student should be able to:

  • Identify the appropriate Cisco products for a given set of WAN technology requirements, including permanent or dial-up access between a central site, branch offices, and telecommuters
  • When given a set of WAN topologies and specifications, assemble and configure Cisco equipment to establish appropriate WAN connections
  • Enable protocols and technologies that allow traffic flow between multiple sites, while minimising the amount of overhead traffic on each connection
  • Implement quality of service capabilities to ensure that mission critical applications receive the required bandwidth within a given WAN topology
  • Within a given WAN topology, implement applicable access control measures to allow desired access into the network
  • When given a WAN topology, ensure proper connectivity using Cisco product features to troubleshoot device protocols and technologies

Prerequisites

A valid CCNA certification is required to sit for the Building Cisco Remote Access Networks v2.0 Exam (BCRAN 642-821). These skills can be gained by passing the CCNA Stages 1 through 4 which are also offered by this university.

Course Outline

CCNP Stage 2 extends the participants capability by developing skills in deploying WAN links for part time and full-time connectivity. This is a network requirement for any organisation to support its workers and business and to manage its network resources, especially now that workers are working from home, other cities and remote sites. This CCNP Stage 2 is part of the recommended learning path for students seeking the Cisco Certified Internetworking Professional (CCIP), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Cisco Certified Design Professional (CCDP), and Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) certifications.

Topics Covered

  • Introduction and revision of WAN technologies
  • POTS for part-time connectivity. Modem configurations
  • ISDN - BRI and PRI principles and router configuration
  • PPP - router and user authentication
  • Frame Relay configuration, point to point and multipoint considerations
  • Backup links for load and reliablility
  • Basic traffic shaping principles and router configuration
  • Merging two enterprises via WANs - Overlapping NAT
  • NAT for server load sharing
  • Emerging WAN technologies

Assessment

  1. To test knowledge awareness and recognition for the CCNP Stage 2 material
    1. Final on-line multiple choice exam (weighting 20%) Students should aim to score over 80% in the final on-line test to have confidence of their knowledge mastery.
    2. A Case Study Presentation (weighting 30%)
  2. Practical skills and troubleshooting assessment (weighting 50%)Individual skills test: to test practical skill and application of knowledge. This is done under time pressure.
