James Hosking
It wasn't until year 12 that James Hosking really became interested in IT. After investigating different IT courses and even looking interstate, UTS came out on top. James is from Ballarat in Victoria and he decided to look interstate because he wanted an adventure and to see what he could achieve. "The weather also was a large contributing factor in my choice to come to Sydney", quipped James.
The opportunity to combine the study of IT with international studies and the very practical style of teaching IT really appealed.
"The course is very practical and hands-on, and international studies was always on the cards - a major factor in choosing UTS. I absolutely loved the sound of the course. Studying international studies will really open up my options. I'll be studying Spanish and going to Chile for my year away. I'm really looking forward to it", said James.
How did James handle the move not just from the country to the city, but interstate?
"The move from country Victoria to Sydney was surprisingly smooth, which I can mostly attribute to student housing at UTS. Student housing made the physical move so easy. The staff were very friendly and it meant I didn't have to go searching for accommodation."
"I can't say enough about how valuable IT camp was for making friends and my social life at Uni. Most of the people I'm currently friends with I met at IT camp."
After one year James is happy he chose UTS and his initial perceptions of the course still stand.
"The facilities in the IT building are great and I love the fact that most of the IT labs run Linux! I was really afraid that I would be left to deal with problems at Uni by myself but that's definitely not the case. If you need help with something there's always support available, so long as you ask."
What would James like to do when he has finished his degree?
"It would be great if I could use my international studies and even work overseas for a while. At this stage I would prefer to work for a small, innovative company that does something I'm passionate about and that will constantly challenge me. Something exciting!"
